The Breville Precision Brewer is a certified drip coffee maker by the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) that has all the features of a high-end coffee machine. This machine brews coffee with precise temperature and time control, making it the perfect machine for home brewing.
The Precision Brewer Thermal coffee maker can be used with automatic presets, six brewing modes, and customizable settings.
The Breville Precision Brewer is a great coffee maker for around $300. It is easy to use and makes great coffee.
The Specialty Coffee Association Certification is only given to coffee machine manufacturers who pass the strict requirements for brewed coffee quality, which are determined by the SCA committee.
The said SCA Home Brewer Certification program was developed by a group of coffee science experts and professional coffee tasters and evaluate coffee brewers based on the following criteria:
- Proper water temperature
- Brewing time
- Capability to brew coffee within and beyond the SCA Golden Cup recommendations
The Breville Precision Brewery machine has been certified by the Specialty Coffee Association.
Features and Benefits
Carafes
There are two potential options for the Precision Brewer’s carafe- either a thermal carafe or a glass carafe. The thermal carafe costs about $40 more than the glass carafe.
The thermal carafe is the most efficient option in terms of heat, as the machine doesn’t have to be turned on. The glass carafe will require you to keep the machine running in order to heat the coffee from the bottom.
It’s important to know that a sealed container also makes the coffee fresher and slows down the acidic taste.
After the coffee has been brewing for 15 to 20 minutes, the volatile acids start to leave the coffee, and the oxygen starts to combine with the coffee oils, making the coffee taste more bitter and sour. We think the thermal carafe is the better choice.
Technology
How hot the water is when you make your coffee can impact how good it tastes.
Coffee makers that use the drip method heat water and release it through the grounds, where it drips into a carafe on a lower plate.
The Breville Precision brewer allows you to prepare coffee with your preferred water temperature and brew time. You can adjust the water temperature between 197 and 204 degrees.
This feature caused the Precision brewer to be shortlisted by the SCA.
The Breville Precision coffee machine also has “showerhead technology” which evenly sprays hot water over the coffee grounds in the filter, rather than just letting it drip into the center. This allows you to get the most flavor out of your coffee grounds.
Breville Precision coffee makers brew coffee that tastes better than coffee brewed with cheap drip coffee makers. The machine is designed to allow you to customize the bloom time and other settings to suit your preferences.
The brewing chamber holds the water according to your preset. This allows you to get the full flavor from the coffee beans in your cup.
Six Presets
Precision and thermal carafes have six brewing modes, five of which are presets. The sixth preset is called MyBrew, where you can select settings to customize the coffee brewed to your liking.
To understand how these presets prepare coffee, here’s a short overview of each setting:
Gold Cup
The Gold Cup setting on the coffee machine allows you to make coffee according to the SCA’s standards. This machine automatically adjusts the brewing time and temperature to create the perfect cup of coffee. To make the perfect cup of coffee, use the same ratio of coffee grounds to water as you would for the Gold Cup.
Fast
To prepare a pot of coffee for everyone, simply tap the Fast setting. It will make a pot of coffee in half the time it takes for a standard coffee maker.
The Breville coffee maker takes less than half the time to brew coffee on the Fast setting than the standard-setting.
Strong Brew
It’s easy to add an extra kick to your coffee with Breville Precision’s strong brew preset. Preset coffee makers like this one automatically increase the strength of coffee, so there’s no need to do it manually.
For a stronger coffee, use more coffee grounds than the usual water to grounds ratio.
Iced Coffee
The Over-the-Ice preset requires a sturdier coffee to help prevent the ice from melting. If you choose this preset, you will need to add twice as many grounds as the average ratio.
The beverage must be cooled for at least 2 hours before serving. This coffee maker can brew up to 20 oz of coffee.
Cold Brew
Cold-brew is different from iced coffee in terms of process and taste (check out our blog for the full discussion about cold brew). Cold-brew coffee is prepared by steeping concentrated coffee extract in cold water for a period of time.
This extract can also be used to make desserts, cocktails, and other iced drinks.
It takes 14 hours for the Precision Brewer to be ready to use. If you want a stronger cold brew, you can let the grounds steep for up to 24 hours.
MyBrew
With MyBrew preset, you’re the God of your coffee. You can customize the brew settings on your Precision Brewer to get the perfect cup of coffee, including the brew temperature, bloom time, and flow rate.
You can adjust the taste of your coffee to suit your preferences by using different brewing methods. For example, you can make coffee that tastes earthy by using a French press.
Pour-Over Adapter
The Precision Brewer comes with a pour-over mode, but Breville recommends using its adapter accessory for the best tasting drip coffee. If you want to use a pour-over coffee maker with a Breville Precision coffee maker, you’ll need to buy a separate adaptor kit.
Likewise, the traditional filter basket assembly is also removable. Instead of using a French press, you can try using a coffee dripper. Two brands that are suggested are Hario V60 and Kalita Wave.
If you want to automate your pour-over coffee experience with Breville Precision, there are some fun options you can do.
Breville Precision Brewer Review
Our list of the top coffee brewers wouldn’t be complete without the Breville Precision Brewer. It’s a great choice for many reasons. This coffee maker is a hybrid of manual and automatic brewing machines, combining the complex technique of manual brewing with the convenience of automatic drip machines.
The machine allows you to make a pour-over style coffee at home, and you can change different brewing parameters to make it perfect.
Design – 4.5/5
This electric drip coffee maker is designed with precision in mind and will look great in your kitchen. The Precision brewer has a sleek, stylish, and sturdy brushed stainless steel finish, unlike the retro-looking Smeg coffee maker.
The water reservoir on this machine is see-through and made from strong plastic. The coffee-to-water ratio is not removable, but there are markings that make it easy to measure.
The Thermocoil Heating System in this machine delivers hot water that is purer than in other more popular aluminum-based brewing systems.
We must warn you, though. It’s quite big and heavy (3.15 lbs). The dimensions of the body (12.4 x 6.7 x 15.7 inches) might not fit on every countertop, so make sure to check the dimensions of your cupboards before purchasing.
Features – 5/5
TheBreville Precision Brewer has precision in its name for a reason; it is highly customizable and has no rivals when it comes to this feature.
This coffee maker from Breville has a temperature control system called PID (proportional, integral, derivative), which is usually found on high-end espresso machines. This makes the temperature extremely accurate. The machine has a pump that automatically adjusts the flow rate to optimize the brew time.
